After 38 years of being in the commercial real estate business in Jacksonville, Florida, I decided to go out on my own and become a sole proprietorship.
Starting in in 1976, I worked for such notable real estate companies as Stockton Whatley Davin & Co., Cross & Brown of Florida, BellSouth Real Estate Department, United Property Investors, Fox & Silverman Investments, Schultz Foster and Addison and for the past 15 years Addison Commercial Real Estate.
In the mid 1990’s, I was vice president of an investment group that owned several significant buildings in downtown Jacksonville including (in order of acquisition) the former 13-story Roosevelt Hotel and parking garage which is now the Carling Apartments, the Park Place building which is now home to the Dalton Agency, the 17-story Lynch Building which is now the 11E Apartments, a downtown parking lot that was condemned for the Library, and the full-city block containing the former 6-story Park View Inn.
I spent many years either owning or brokering property in the downtown Jacksonville market and I’ve been involved with as many downtown buildings as anybody. But downtown is still trying to find itself and re-create the vibrant environment that was there two decades ago. Since retail left downtown in the late 1980’s the push has been to bring housing back downtown (which has been fairly non-existent since the Great Fire in 1901) with the hope that more residents will bring back some retail to help create a mixed-use atmosphere that is interesting and compelling to do business or live downtown. There’s some new energy buzzing around downtown and this will hopefully translate into action and re-development.
